A pinning ceremony is held towards the end of the last academic term as a way to symbolically welcome both new or soon-to-be graduates into the nursing profession. During this event, students are often pinned by faculty or a person significant in their life. Accompanying the pinning are student nurses holding a lamp-light as they recite a pledge to commemorate Florence Nightingale for tending to wounded soldiers by candlelight.
